West of Golden Spike National Historical Park, the Transcontinental Railroad Back Country Byway follows about 90 miles of the original Central Pacific Railroad grade across the Promontory and lakeside desert. The route runs the graded rail bed past cuts, fills, and remnant hardware. Access begins from State Route 83 near the Golden Spike area.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
