One of the largest mainland northern elephant seal rookeries in California: thousands of seals haul out on beaches just north of San Simeon along Highway 1. Free public boardwalks and vista pullouts (managed with Friends of the Elephant Seal docents) give close, legal viewing of breeding (winter), molting, and resting seasons without entering the beach.
