Old Plank Road

Imperial County, CA

Coordinate verified

Remnants of the 1915 wooden plank road that once carried early motorists eight-by-twelve-foot sections across the shifting Algodones (Imperial) Sand Dunes—California Historical Landmark No. 845. Double-width passing sections and movable planks let teams of horses relocate buried spans. Today BLM protects surviving segments and an interpretive pullout along Grays Well Road as a rare desert transportation landscape inside the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area / ACEC.
