Fort Piute

San Bernardino County, CA

Coordinate verified

Stone ruins of a short-lived U.S. Army outpost (1866–1867) built to protect mail and emigrants on the Mojave Road, set above rare perennial Piute Creek on the eastern edge of Mojave National Preserve. Cottonwoods, a short gorge, and wayside exhibits frame one of the preserve's most evocative historic–riparian walks.
