The Desert Experimental Range occupies about 87 square miles of salt-desert shrubland in Pine Valley west of Milford. Set aside in 1933 for rangeland research and later named a UNESCO biosphere reserve for cold desert systems, it retains CCC-built headquarters buildings from 1934–35. The Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station still uses the site for long-term ecology work; public recreation is secondary to research.
