Deep sandstone canyons and Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings sit on Navajo Nation land near Chinle, Arizona, inside Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The National Park Service and Navajo Nation co-manage the unit. Public self-guided access is mainly the South and North Rim overlook drives; canyon-floor travel requires an authorized Navajo guide. Spider Rock, White House ruin when open under current rules, and other overlooks are the usual stops.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
