Southwest of Alpine, Arizona, at about 7,600 feet in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, the Caldwell family built a hand-hewn log homestead in the 1920s. The Forest Service acquired the site in the 1960s after mid-century expansions and now rents the cabin seasonally. Access is by forest roads 26 or 276.
Cultural sites and artifacts are protected by federal law (ARPA/NHPA) — stay on established routes, touch and remove nothing, and follow the managing agency's and the affiliated tribe's guidance on access.
