Frenchman Mountain: Standing on a Billion-Year Gap East of Las Vegas
A trailhead east of Las Vegas leads to a roughly 1.2-billion-year gap in the rock record, and the exposure that a 2023 paper used to name a new formation.
Most people driving Lake Mead Boulevard east out of Las Vegas are headed to the lake. A short unpaved pull-off on the way there marks something older and stranger: a trail where you can put a hand on rock from two wildly different chapters of Earth’s history, separated by more than a billion years, with nothing but a single line between them.
What you’re actually looking at
The formal name is the Great Unconformity, and Frenchman Mountain has one of the best-exposed examples in the Southwest. Walking the main trail, you cross back and forth between three things: roughly 1.7-billion-year-old Precambrian granite and schist, the unconformity surface itself, and the Cambrian Tapeats Sandstone sitting directly on top of it. The rock record in between — well over a billion years of it — simply isn’t there. It eroded away before the Tapeats was ever deposited, so the sandstone rests straight on basement rock that formed in an entirely different era of the planet.
Once you know to look for it, the tilt is part of the story too: the whole Paleozoic package here leans sharply, tipped roughly 50 degrees during Basin and Range extension around 10 million years ago — much more recent than either of the rock units it’s tilting.
Reading the rocks along the trail
Two trails leave from the same general trailhead: one climbs toward the summit, the other heads toward a patch of greener-looking material and an old water tank to the south. The unconformity exposure is along the lower route, not the summit climb.
Expect scattered trash and broken glass right at the trailhead — a known nuisance on this stretch — that thins out fast as you get away from the road. From there the geology takes over: coarse pink-and-gray granite with visible feldspar and quartz crystals, darker bands of schist, and, if you know what you’re looking at, angular whitish quartz pebbles embedded in the sandstone above. Those pebbles are the single best souvenir of the story here — they’re basement quartz that eroded out, got swept into the Tapeats as it was deposited around 500 million years ago, and is only now eroding out a second time onto the modern slopes. A loose piece of quartz on the trail today may have already made this trip once before.
The most useful things to look for, in order: quartz still attached to the basement rock, quartz pebbles still embedded in the sandstone, the actual contact where granite meets schist, and the unconformity contact itself where basement meets Tapeats. Loose float on the surface is the least informative of the four — it tells you almost nothing about where it started out.
This is public BLM ground and a geologically significant reference section, not a rockhounding pit — treat it as a look, don’t take site, and leave the outcrops for the next hiker to read.
A trail with a name in the literature
In 2023, a team led by Steve Rowland — the UNLV geology professor whose field guide covers this exact trail — formally named the Frenchman Mountain Dolostone, a Cambrian rock unit sitting above the older, better-known Muav Formation, in the journal Geosphere. It’s named after this mountain because the exposure here is the thickest and most complete anywhere it’s been found: more than 1,200 feet thick at Frenchman Mountain, thinning to under 100 feet by the time the same rock unit is traced east into Marble Canyon. The reference copy of a formally described rock formation sits on a trail a few minutes from the Las Vegas valley floor.
Getting there and staying safe
The trailhead sits off Lake Mead Boulevard on the east side of Las Vegas, on BLM land, with unpaved parking. Bring water on the hike itself rather than leaving it in the car — there’s no shade and no water source once you’re out on the trail. Watch for wildlife: this stretch of desert supports roadrunners and cactus wrens, among the more common sightings. As with any Mojave hike, the cooler months make for a far more comfortable visit than summer.
